Doctoral Requirements 2017

Recently, dissertation councils have become stricter about awarding degrees. Each dissertation is subject to strict requirements, non-observance of which is fraught with a “failure” of the defense. What do you need to know about the requirements for a doctoral dissertation 2017?

Doctoral dissertation is a scientific work, the results of which are qualified as scientific achievements or as a solution to an actual scientific problem. Applicants with a PhD degree are allowed to defend it.

A self-written doctoral dissertation is your personal contribution to the development of science, therefore its materials should reflect the research results you have received, as well as the recommendations you have developed for the practical application of the results obtained. These conclusions should have sufficient reasoning and a qualified assessment in comparison with existing solutions.

You can use the materials of your Ph.D. thesis, but their volume should not exceed 20% of the total doctoral dissertation.

The results of a doctoral dissertation should be presented in a single-written monograph, as well as in peer-reviewed domestic and foreign publications.

Number of required HAC publications:

• in the field of art history and cultural studies, socio-economic, social and human sciences – at least 15;
• in other areas – at least 10.

If you participated in collective scientific work or used the results obtained by other researchers, be sure to note this fact in your work.

If you performed scientific work on the basis of an organization (university, research institutes, industrial and agricultural enterprises and other institutions), you must submit to the Dissertation Council the conclusion of the organization’s leaders on your research, which indicates the results obtained and the degree of your participation.

Along with the text of the doctoral thesis, you need to submit a printed author’s abstract. The abstract should briefly contain the main results of the scientific research, reflect your personal contribution to the study of the problem, demonstrate the scientific novelty and practical significance of the research, and also contain the main conclusions.

Thesis requirements

In accordance with the Rules of the Higher Attestation Commission, a doctoral dissertation can be submitted in three forms: handwritten (most common), monograph and scientific report.

The handwritten form should have the following structure:

• title page (with topic name);
• table of contents;
• body text;
• list of references;
• tables, illustrations, and other attachments, if available.

Do not forget that a dissertation is a specially prepared manuscript, the title of which must reflect the topic of scientific research.

There are no restrictions on the volume of the dissertation, since it can be different for different specialties. However, in the scientific community, it is believed that the dissertation should be more than 300 pages.

According to requirements for a doctoral thesis in 2017, the dissertation text and abstract should be available to everyone on the official website and in the library of the organization on the basis of which the Dissertation Council exists.
